Resort Information
With a population of around 800, Hetta Village is the administrative centre of the Enontekiö municipality and home to the last aboriginal people in Finland, the Sami.
It is ideally located for many different outdoor pursuits, from day hikes in the beautiful surrounding countryside, to kilometres of well maintained cross-country skiing tracks.
The village also plays host to the informative and child friendly ‘Fell Lapland Nature Centre’. It houses many interesting displays about the fauna and flora found in the area, which includes Norway lemming, arctic fox, snowy owl, Eurasian Dotterel, ptarmigan, and ring ouzel. Advice on excursions and local permits can also be obtained here.
The Enontekiö church in the centre of the village was built in 1951. The modern brick and concrete exterior was designed by Veikko Larkas and includes a slender 30m high tower. The artist Uuno Eskola built the altarpiece, using several techniques, including mosaic and fresco.
Lake Ounasjärvi, located to the south, is popular with canoeists and fishermen alike and is the perfect place to set off on a boat trip. The far side of the lake stands Pyhäkero Fell, the most northernly peak within the stunning Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.
The village provides modern amenities and a rich vein of history, a great place to learn about Finnish culture.
