Resort Information
Karesuvanto was founded in 1670 and is situated alongside the Muoniojoko River, in the shadow of the magnificent Kaarevaara Hill, with its excellent views and vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The village has a population of around 1,000 and is famous for one half being located in Finland, while the other half, Karesuando, is located in Sweden. This quirky mix gives the village a very International feel and has been a central meeting spot for commerce and trade for well over 400 years.
If history is your thing then you won’t be disappointed. The village boasts one of Finland’s oldest market squares and Churches. This combination of trade and worship traditionally attracted many people from the upper fells and teh surrounding villages to the annual Church festivals.
These gatherings combined religion, commerce and a party atmosphere that could last for up to two weeks at a time! This tendency towards trade has not diminished over the centuries and the village still offers an abundance of services and trades including restaurants, hotels, butchers, a garage and a health centre.
The Swedish half of the village is home to an excellent sports hall, swimming pool and camp site. Local guides also offer for hire their friendly and priceless knowledge of the local area.
Overall, Karesuvanto is an excellent mix of the traditional Finnish ways of life and the cosmopolitan lifestyle of today.
